The Spirit of Uji’s Tea Heritage

Soumei no Mukashi (双明の昔) is a masterpiece by Kanbayashi Shunshō Honten, one of the oldest and most revered tea houses in Uji, Kyoto — founded in the 16th century, known as an official tea purveyor to the Japanese Imperial Household.

This matcha embodies the essence of Koicha (濃茶) — the thick, luxurious form of matcha used in high tea ceremonies.
Soumei no Mukashi reveals deep umami, subtle natural sweetness, and a silky smooth texture that unfolds slowly on the palate.

Every sip delivers a sense of harmony — where tradition, craftsmanship, and stillness meet.

Taste & Experience

  • Flavor: deep umami, rich body, mellow sweetness

  • Color: vivid green with a lustrous sheen

  • Texture: velvety and thick, perfectly balanced
Perfect for koicha (thick ceremonial matcha) or quiet moments of contemplation.

How to Prepare

  1. Sift 2g (½ tsp) of matcha into a chawan

  2. Add 40–50ml of hot water (80°C / 176°F)

  3. Whisk slowly in circular motion to create a smooth, thick texture (not foamy)

  4. Sip directly — feel the weight, depth, and calm.
